“The idea of City of Shadows emerged quite unexpectedly and quite naturally during the collapse of the Soviet Union in the fall of 1991. I mean that the concept itself stemmed from my impressions nourished by the everyday reality. At some point I realized that I was struggling with emptiness and that my creative impulses – initially absolutely sincere – were running the risk of contemplating upon ideas no longer valid. Give us a mini statement on this work.

Early on in my painting career I disregarded the human form. I have never felt a strong connection to people and therefore they very rarely frequent my art. I enjoy painting from experience and only paint something that I feel I have had a close physical and emotional connection too. Grubs, caterpillars, and camel crickets are all insects that as a child I caught or in some cases played with. Possums, turkeys, chickens, frogs, and goats are pets or animals I have had growing up.

My femininity is something I have always struggled with. Not in a traditional sense but more so in an artistic sense. I embrace it as part of my aesthetic because in many ways one cannot ignore that our sexuality is in many ways a large part of who we are. The pastel palette and the lace are juxtaposed against these often grotesque or unattractive specimens in order to better illustrate the conflict of a classic battle between ugly and pretty. The viewer is pulled in by the color pallet and the lace and is repulsed by the subject matter itself. One is unable to identify if they are attracted to the piece or disturbed.

Please tell us your thoughts on slugs and all other things slimy.

I have never been afraid of bugs, in fact I find them fascinating. I love to learn as much about them as I possibly can and do independent research on my subject matter as well try to observe them in person. I’m always outdoors catching a releasing small specimens after photographing or sketching them.

What are you drawing inspiration from these days?

Taxidermy is something I am becoming more interested in I look forward to hopefully one day have my own collection. I’ve begun to gather small animal bones and bug boxes to decorate my shelves with. . I have gained much influence through the art of Amy Ross, Wangechi Mutu, Polly Morgan, Julian Salaud as well as Egon Schiele. They are strong contributors to my aesthetic.

What kinds of upcoming projects do we have to look forward to?

Well I would hate to give too much away but I’m definitely becoming more interested in 3-D, paper sculpture specifically. If I had the right resources I wouldn’t be entirely opposed to working with Taxidermy as I’ve mentioned. However, 2-D art is always going to be my love, and I currently have a few series I have been working on which include but are not limited to bugs, two-headed animals and children. Much of my early work was large, and I’m interested in doing a wall sized piece or pieces I think the “ in your face” of a work that large could be an interesting dynamic to work with, especially when your concentration is on such small subjects.

When are you building a damn website so that those of us who are Caitlin-starved can stalk you?

You are not the first and will not be the last person to ask me this question. To be completely honest I’m just not sure. The Truth is right now I just don’t have that high of a turn-over rate with my work. I don’t make enough of it to justify a website. I’m going back to school for Curatorial work this fall and am hoping to start a blog that features not only my artwork but the artwork of other up and comings so I guess you will just have to wait and see.
